This marriage could strengthen Byzantine-Ilkhanate relations and threaten the Turks in the Borders. Osman Bey, aware of the danger and Gorklu Khan's hostility, strategizes to prevent the marriage and take Princess Maria, aiming to safeguard the fate of the Turks.
