A focused account of how social inequality, fiscal crisis and political mobilization transformed France after 1789. Follow the collapse of royal authority, the radical revolution and its consequences, with the limits of dramatized court-centered films made explicit.
A carefully selected introduction emphasizing major turning points and differing perspectives.
The Revolution unfolded through struggles over sovereignty, economic distress, popular action and political violence. Palace-centered dramas and retrospective biopics are only partial windows onto these forces. The Napoleonic era is treated as a sequel, not as the Revolution itself.
The monarchy faced severe fiscal and legitimacy crises while privilege and daily hardship became central grievances. A court story alone cannot explain the grievances of peasants, urban workers and the Third Estate.
1770 → 1789
ПРЕДСТАВЛЕННАЯ ИСТОРИЯ 1770 → 1789
Establishes court rituals, privilege and the isolation of the royal household in the decades preceding 1789.
A stylized and selective portrait; the film gives far less space to common people and structural economic causes.
The Estates-General, National Assembly, popular mobilization and end of royal sovereignty were distinct stages, not a single coup.
1789 → 1794
ПРЕДСТАВЛЕННАЯ ИСТОРИЯ 1789 → 1794
Provides a connected narrative of the 1789 crisis, the revolution and competing factions as the monarchy collapses.
A sweeping dramatization that compresses disputed motives and simplifies several revolutionary coalitions.
The fall of the monarchy and republican war radicalized political conflict. The Terror should be understood amid political choices, repression, popular mobilization and external war.
1793 → 1794
ПРЕДСТАВЛЕННАЯ ИСТОРИЯ 1793 → 1794
Concentrates on the clash around Danton and Robespierre, opening discussion of revolutionary justice and political terror.
A politically interpreted historical drama, not a neutral transcript of 1793–1794.
The Directory struggled with instability before Napoleon seized power in 1799. The later empire belongs to a separate journey.
