The Industrial Revolution

Steam, factories, labor and the industrial city, c. 1760–1900

A focused journey through the social and human consequences of industrialization, from the first mechanized economies to mines, textile mills, railroads and urban change. Existing films depict mostly the nineteenth-century phase: eighteenth-century inventions and early British factory production require historical context rather than misleading stand-ins.

HISTORICAL CONTEXT

Historical introduction

Industrialization did not unfold everywhere at the same time. Britain’s eighteenth-century mechanization preceded nineteenth-century industrial growth in France, Poland and the United States. Screen dramas concentrate on labor, transport and urban inequalities rather than inventors or technology.

03
HISTORICAL CONTEXT

Railways and continental expansion · 1860s

Rail lines mobilized labor and resources, displaced communities and linked emerging national markets. The railroad drama is a fictional perspective, not a documentary of national industrialization.
