Berlin im Zweiten Weltkrieg: Die deutsche Familie Rossler bangt um die Leben ihrer Kinder: Der Sohn an der Front, die Tochter schwerbehindert und somit ein potentielles Opfer des willkürlich mordenden Regimes. Mitten in Warschau verhandelt unterdessen der englische Übersetzer Harry mit den Nazis, während er zugleich nicht nur seine polnische Geliebte Kasia aus dem Land bringen will, sondern auch seine britische Ehefrau im Heimatland beruhigt. Diese hat aber auf ihre ganz eigene Weise mit den Wirkungen des großen Krieges umzugehen – denn für sie bedeutet dies vorerst erst einmal, dass der dröge Fabrikjob nicht mehr die einzige Zukunftsalternative zu sein scheint. Und auch Kriegskorrespondentin Nancy erfährt den Weltkrieg auf eine sehr eigene Weise.
