Der Pharmakonzern Purdue bringt ein neues Schmerzmittel namens OxyContin auf den Markt, das bei den niedergelassenen Ärzten als neues Wunderheilmittel vermarktet wird, da angeblich nur weniger als ein Prozent der Patienten davon süchtig werden. Der Hausarzt und Allgemeinmediziner Dr. Samuel Finnix verschreibt guten Gewissens das neue Medikament an seine Patienten, die als Minenarbeiter in Virgina aufgrund der harten körperlichen Arbeit auf Schmerzmittel zurückgreifen müssen. Doch mit der Zeit stellt sich heraus, dass die Patienten ein exzessives Suchtverhalten entwickeln. Der Leiter der Drogenbehörde sowie das Gesundheitsamt streben eine Untersuchung des neuen Wundermittels an, während das Pharmaunternehmen sich schließlich vor Gericht verantworten muss. Währenddessen steigt die Rate der Gewaltdelikte in Virgina rasant an und die Gemeinschaft der Minenarbeiter versinkt im Chaos. Schnell weitet sich das Problem auf das ganze Land aus.
